It's been nearly a year since adidas announced a new collaboration, with Adidas unveiling its first Italian kit since the 1970s.
Following in the footsteps of PUMA, Adidas intends to dress the Italians in a new home and away jersey that marks the start of a new era. Since Adidas last created jerseys for the Italian national team 45 years ago, the brand has embarked on a lengthy journey in pursuit of expressing the heart of Italy, uniting both the South and the North.
Marble was discovered to be the most emblematic feature of Italy that was not as cheesy as pasta or pizza. This theme was chosen for both jerseys since it can be seen all around Italy, from museums to apartments, from the Northern regions all the way down to Sicily. When you think of marble, you immediately think of Italy.
“Italy is one of the most storied and successful national teams in all of football. We are very proud to officially welcome the FIGC and all its teams to the adidas family and we look forward to a successful partnership together. At the same time, we are tremendously excited to finally be able to share with the world our fantastic lineup of products including beautiful home and away kits. They are quintessentially Italian and elegant while staying true to the iconic heritage of the ´Azzurri`.” - Bjørn Gulden, Chief Executive Officer at adidas.
The marble pattern on Italy's away jersey is more innovative and overt, mixing an 'off-white' foundation with navy blue and gold detailing across the shirt. The jersey has the same Italian details and elements as the home jersey, including the 'Italia' badge, which resembles the fonts used for player names and numbers on jerseys, which are derived from Roman engravings.
Through this new relationship, adidas has embraced Italy's beauty and blended its legacy into the uniform, launching a new era for the national team. The Italian national team players will feel easily dignified and humble when they put on these jerseys, honouring their heritage and the true Azzurri.
