After a season that a club like Manchester City would deem a failure, (unless they embarrass us here and take out the Champions League) the 20/21 season will be a statement one for Pep Guardiola and City who won’t want Liverpool to press on and take out back-to-back titles. With their recent Champions League ban lifted it’s all systems go for the upcoming campaign and Puma have delivered a jersey that fits what should be a massive season for the blue half of Manchester.
The 20/21 Manchester City home jersey design is inspired by the iconic mosaics located in the creative hub of Manchester’s Northern Quarter and also pays homage to a city brimming with football and creativity. There’s an amazing music and art scene in Manchester with a diverse culture bringing so many different positives to a city housing two of the biggest football clubs in the world. This jersey aims to celebrate the diverse culture within the city.
Manchester's affiliation with mosaics has been around for around 100 years when the original Manchester City mosaic was first seen on the gates of the now closed Maine Road Stadium. This tradition continues with many club legends being immortalized around the City Football Academy in the form of mosaics, which aim to inspire the next generation of City superstars. Who wouldn’t want a mosaic of themselves in one of the worlds biggest club academies!
Mark Kennedy, the artist behind the mosaics of Manchester’s Northern Quarter as well as the player artworks at the City Football Academy said, “When I began my journey as an artist, the Northern Quarter was a derelict area that I looked at and wanted to build up. I began creating Manchester icons using ceramic plates and tiles, integrating my own artistic style. My family and I have always been huge City fans, so I created artwork of the players too. Over time I was commissioned to create artwork for the club and the city of Manchester, so I feel very privileged to see PUMA use my art as inspiration for the new City Home jersey.”
