Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are arguably the two best managers in the world and have been for a while. We look at every time the two managers have come up against each other all the way back to their first meeting in 2013.
1. Borussia Dortmund 4-2 Bayern Munich (27/7/13)
Jurgen Klopp got the better of Pep in their first-ever meeting back in 2013 which was also Peps first game as Bayern coach in the German Super Cup. A Marco Reus double handed Dortmunf the win as Arjen Robben scored twice for Bayern.
2. Borussia Dortmund 0-3 Bayern Munich (23/11/13)
In November 2013 Mario Goetze returned to the Signal Iduna Park, coming off the bench and opening the scoring In Pep & Jurgens second encounter. Thiago & Lahm added two more in the last 10 minutes as Bayern won 3-0
3. Bayern Munich 0-3 Borussia Dortmund (12/4/14)
In the same season, Borussia Dortmund came to the Allianz and returned the favour, handing Bayern Munich a 3-0 home loss. Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marco Reus and Jonas Hofman gave Jurgen Klopp his second win over Pep Guardiola
4. Borussia Dortmund 0-2 Bayern Munich (17/5/14)
The sides played off again in the 2014 DFB-Pokal and this time it was Pep lifting the trophy. The match went into extra time with Arjen Robben scoring in the 108th minute before Thomas Muller finished the game off in stoppage time.
5. Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Bayern Munich (13/8/14)
The sides met in the Super Cup final again with Jurgen Klopp & Borussia Dortmund getting the win for the second year in a row. goals from Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang meant Klopp went ahead in the battle of the managers with a 3-2 lead over Pep.
6. Bayern Munich 2-1 Borussia Dortmund (1/11/14)
The first meeting of the 14/15 season saw Robert Lewandowski follow in Mario Goetze’s footsteps and join Bayern from Dortmund. Lewandowski opened the scoring before Arjen Robben scored a penalty in the 85th minute to seal the win.
7. Borussia Dortmund 0-1 Bayern Munich (4/4/15)
Bayern Munich did the double over Dortmund in the 14/15 season thanks to another goal from former Dortmund man Robert Lewandowski. The win meant that Pep Guardiola had taken the lead going 4 wins to 3 over Jurgen Klopp.
8. Bayern Munich 1-1 Borussia Dortmund (0-2 pens) (28/4/15)
The sides met again a few weeks later in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal in what would be the pairs last meeting in Germany. The match went to penalties with the score being 0-0 after 120 minutes. Bayern missed every single one as Dortmund and Klopp went through to the final.
9. Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City (31/12/16)
It was nearly two years before the two managers met again, this time in England with Pep at Manchester City and Klopp taking over Liverpool. Their first meeting in England was in the league at Anfield with Klopp getting the better of Pep thanks to Gini Wijnaldum.
10. Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool (19/3/17)
A few months later at the Etihad, the clubs couldn’t be separated in a 1-1 draw with Sergio Aguero & James Milner amongst the goals. The draw was the first between the two in the league taking the overall results to 4 wins for Pep, 5 wins for Jurgen and 1 draw.
11. Manchester City 5-0 Liverpool (9/9/17)
The first meeting between the sides for the 2017/18 season was a massive win for Manchester City after an early sending off for Sadio Mane saw Liverpool go down to 10 men. Goals for Sane, Jesus and Aguero gave Pep Guardiola his biggest win over Jurgen Klopp.
12. Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City (14/1/18)
The reds turned it around later that season at Anfield, winning 4-3 in one of the games of the season. 3 goals in 10 minutes from Firmino, Salah & Mane was enough for Liverpool to hang on after a late come-back for City got them within a goal.
13. Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City (4/4/18)
The sides met again later in 2018 in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League with Liverpool wiping the floor with City in the first leg Jurgen Klopp getting the better of Pep again. Goals from Salah, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane gave Liverpool the advantage in the tie.
14. Manchester City 1-2 Liverpool (10/4/18)
The second leg of the Champions League tie saw Gabriel Jesus score in the first two minutes making Liverpool fans nervous. Liverpool went on to weather the storm and Salah and Firmino scored to hand Liverpool a 5-1 win on aggregate.
15. Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City (7/10/18)
Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola played in their first-ever 0-0 draw in their fifteenth meeting. The sides cancelled each other out in the first encounter of the 2018/19 season with Riyad Mahrez missing a penalty in stoppage time as the clubs shared the points.
16. Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool (3/1/19)
In what was essentially a title decided, it was arguably the most important match the two managers had played against each other. John Stones made a spectacular goal-line clearance before Sergio Aguero opened the scoring. Firmino levelled for the reds but a Leroy Sane winner would go on to prove vital in Manchester City’s title win.
17. Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City (4-5 pens) (4/8/19)
In the Community Shield in 2019, the sides were level after 90 minutes after Joel Matip equalised in the 77th minute after Raheem Sterling opened the scoring. Claudio Bravo went on to save a Gini Wijnaldum penalty, with Pep winning another trophy.
18. Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City (10/11/19)
Liverpool started the 2019/20 season on fire, beating Manchester City 3-1 in November. Fabinho scored one of the goals of the season with Salah & Mane adding two more before Bernado Silva pulled one back with Liverpool moving 8 points clear at the top of the table
19. Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool (2/7/20)
By the time the two sides met again in 2020, Liverpool were already champions. Liverpool had taken the foot off the gas and Manchester city had a point to prove and did just that, winning 4-0 thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Sterling and a Phil Foden brace.
20. Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool (8/11/20)
The sides couldn’t be separated in their first meeting of the 2020/21 season with the managers sharing the points for just the third time in 20 meetings. Salah opened the scoring from the spot after Kyle Walker fouled Sadio Mane before Gabriel Jesus equalised for Manchester City. City went on to win a penalty too to win the game, but Kevin De Bruyne put it wide.
21. Manchester City 4-1 Liverpool (8/2/21)
After missing out on lasts season’s title, Manchester City & Pep Guardiola were determined to beat Liverpool. Gundogan missed a first-half penalty but made amends in the second-half with a brace. Further goals from Sterling & Foden meant Salah’s was just a consolation as Manchester City marched on to another Premier League Title.
The meeting this weekend will be the 22nd between the two managers and could be on of the last in the Premier League. As it stands Pep and Klopp both have 9 wins against each other with 3 draws, will who will take the lead in the battle of the managers this weekend?
