Adidas Trefoil and football jerseys, the reunion we’ve all been waiting for…
Fri, Aug 09.24

The adidas trefoil logo dates back to 1972, created by Adi Dassler, the three leaves symbolise the three pillars of lifestyle, sports and heritage. The trefoil logo immediately became an iconic part of the adidas range, and the trefoil tees and zip up jackets became an instant necessity for anyone’s wardrobe.
It was two years later that the trefoil logo made its way on to football jerseys. This was a statement from the brand, putting the lifestyle logo on to football jerseys and in turn showing the world that football jerseys are more than just a uniform to be worn on the pitch, that they too can be a statement lifestyle piece.
This era saw Adidas experimenting with the logo on both club and national team kits, including the iconic West Germany team that triumphed in the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
In the 1980’s, the logo became a staple for adidas clubs, featuring on jerseys for the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Manchester United to name a few. In these years we saw some of the greatest football jerseys ever made, think royal blue Man United with the SHARP sponsoring and Arsenal JVC…glory days.
Fast forward to the 90’s and although there were a few trefoil beauties (talking about you bruised banana), largely the brand started to move away from the logo in football and the three-stripe branding took centre-stage.
While the trefoil logo remained prominent throughout adi’s lifestyle range, it all but seemed that the days of it appearing on football jerseys were numbered. That is until now. Adidas have released a range of third jerseys for their A clubs with the trefoil logo back in its rightful place.
The emergence of the vintage football jersey market around the world has undoubtedly piqued the interest of the brands and we’ve started to see a number of reissues and re-releases of vintage jerseys recently. Now, we get the vintage trefoil logo back, but on modern third jerseys, a really interesting and positive move from adidas which is sure to be popular amongst fans and kit collectors alike.
The trefoil logo’s journey through football starting in the 1970s and culminating in the season 24/25 third jerseys is a testament to its everlasting appeal to consumers and the ongoing relationship between fashion and football.
