Top 10 Borussia Dortmund Kits of All Time
Mon, May 22.23

Whenever fans see the yellow and black combo, they instantly associate it with Borussia Dortmund. But where did this come from? We have to date back to the early 1900’s to unpack the iconic colour scheme.
Founded in 1909, the club had originally played in a black and white strip, until Franz Jacobi, a member of BVB’s club management, was impressed by the jersey of Dortmund’s opposition FC Basel at the time.
Unfortunately not as inspiring as many think, but nonetheless the iconic black and yellow would become a distinct feature in the Bundesliga and across the world over the next century, with both Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League titles being lifted over the years whilst partnering with the biggest sports brands such as Nike, adidas and Kappa to produce some of the most iconic kits that collectors chase after.
That Famous Black and Yellow Colour Scheme
In many ways, the evolution of Dortmund kits give a great overview of how far football garments have come. From boxy fits & bespoke sponsorships to modern day remakes. We all have memories of a few Dortmund kits in our minds. With so many iconic kits that pay tribute to different era’s, we’ve carefully selected our top 10 of all time.
10. 2000 - 2001 Home Kit
An early 2000’s favourite, the jersey had bold black and yellow vertical stripe blockings that featured the catchy e-on sponsorship. The V-neck further complimented the overall design by manufacturers goool.de, a sportswear and leisure clothing company owned by Borussia Dortmund themselves at the time.

9. 2010 - 2011 Home Kit
For many Dortmund fans, this well designed Kappa jersey represented a golden era for the club as they finished first in the bundesliga this season for the first time in ten years. Little did they know, Bayern Munich would take over to dominate the league as champions for ten seasons in a row shortly after. Giving the kit the deserved credit, the classic Kappa logos placed on both shoulders along with the subtle horizontal lines would forever go down as a classic worn by Dortmund legends, Lewandowski, Kagawa, Sahin, Schmelzer and so on.

8. 2020 - 2021 Fourth Kit
A recent limited edition banger that caught our eye from Puma was the 1990s inspired kit. The jersey predominantly featured an all over print graphic that represented club legends from the past. Black and white cuffs on the sleeves which matched the collar rounded the design off with a vintage yet clever look, that suits just as well off the pitch as on the pitch.

7. 1990 - 1991 Home Kit
The impact of the Nike takeover at Borussia Dortmund was instantly made with an even more disruptive design. Whilst the bold Continental sponsorship remained, Nike had implemented an unexpected blocking around the shoulder and chest areas of the jersey which further highlighted the swoosh and BVB logos which were closely placed near the center of the jersey.

6. 1988 - 1989 Home Kit
A collectors’ dream. Featuring a fashionable yellow base with gradient graphics, the jersey definitely screams retro for football fans and jersey enthusiasts all around the world. What made this piece extra unique however, was the adidas trefoil logo and Continental sponsorship placed so visibly on the jersey. Rounded off with the iconic three stripes down each shoulder, this created one of Dortmund’s most recognisable kits. The look of jerseys from this era still plays a role in fashion today, particularly from adidas originals, the lifestyle department offered by the three stripes.

5. 1997 - 1998 Away Kit
Following the years of successful kits seen at Dortmund, Nike brought the fans an unexpected away kit this campaign. Whilst the collar, cuffs and logos were made up of the classic yellow and black BVB colours, the base of the kit was grey. A bold move at the time to use a color that was not traditionally associated with the club, but this created one of the most stand out jerseys in the team's history.

4. 1998 - 2000 Home Kit
No Continental sponsor? No problem. In comes another iconic German company, S.Oliver - a fashion company selling fragrance and apparel. Whilst the main update was the sponsor, the shade of yellow used was also different this season with the “almost gold” tone making the jersey stand out significantly from the previous black and yellow based kits.

3. 2019 - 2020 Anniversary Kit
110 years of Borussia Dortmund was commemorated by Puma with the German sports brand releasing a special edition stealth kit, showcasing the long and proud history of Dortmund’s coal and steel industries. The complete black design also featured the club logos, sponsors and player names in a faded silver tone which made the kit extra unique.

2. 1992 - 1993 Home Kit
Throwing it back thirty years, we’ve ranked this masterpiece at number two. It’s hard to ignore the graphic accents across the sides of the jersey, which looked even better when players were in motion. The v-neck collar was also finished with an extra touch by Nike, adding dashed volt yellow lines across the area.

1. 1995 - 1996 Home & Away Kits
First place is a no brainer for us at Ultra Football. We’ve been selfish here, choosing both the 95/96 BVB Home & Away kits by Nike. These are arguably two of the most chased after vintage jerseys in today’s resell market. The black base paired with volt yellow pops, or vice versa. Rounded off with a classical collar makes it that much more exciting and yet wearable for off-pitch football fashion enthusiasts. Making this kit extra special in recent times, Jadon Sancho was seen celebrating in style with this away strip after winning the DFB Supercup. Modern players in classic kits, as fans, we love to see it.
