The New Peter Saville x Manchester United Collection Has Landed
Tue, Oct 24.23

Manchester United and adidas have announced a second collaboration with the iconic designer Peter Saville. The Manchester born and bred creative isn’t the kind of famous where you would recognise his face. But nevertheless you’d have to be living under a rock to not know his work. He has a diverse portfolio, revamping brands such as Burberry and Lacoste, designing clothes for adidas and Y-3. He’s no stranger to the football space either, working with the England national team, and on previous collaborations with Manchester United.
Saville is still best known though; for his work in the Music industry with the likes of Joy Division and New Order. The collaboration builds on the previous collection referencing Joy Division’s Transcendental ‘Unknown Pleasures’ album cover. The second iteration will pull from another of Saville’s seminal works with a series of his record covers for New Order beginning with ‘Blue Monday’ released in March 1983, where he developed a codex system that would convert different colour combinations to letters and numbers.
Staying true to Saville’s style, and the original design choices of the album. The new collection features almost no branding whatsoever; even adidas’ three stripes have been reduced back to a subtle tonal colour treatment. The Only noticeable graphic element is the colour code lifted from the original artwork of ‘Blue Monday’, which, on the collection, when translated with the alphabet key, reads: Concilio et Labore, the City of Manchester’s motto in Latin, referencing not only the club itself but Saville’s own ties to the fabric of his city he held a 10 year creative directorship over between 2005-15.
