The Dutch Masters: Why Amsterdam is a Football Culture Capital
Fri, Mar 31.23

Football is a universal language that transcends borders and brings people together in a shared love of the game. But in Amsterdam, football is much more than just a sport - it's a way of life. Amsterdam, known for its iconic football team AFC Ajax, enthusiastic supporters, football-inspired fashion brands, and vibrant art and music scene, is a recognised football culture capital.
The Dutch Masters of football have produced some of the most skillful and entertaining teams and players in the history of the game. The Netherlands national team, also known as the Oranje, has a proud footballing tradition. The Dutch are renowned for their "Total Football" style of play, which emphasizes fluidity and versatility, with players interchanging positions to create space and confusion in the opposition's defense.
Aside from their massive local club, Ajax, Amsterdam also has a bustling amateur football scene, with hundreds of local teams playing every weekend. The city's parks and squares are filled with players of all ages, genders, and abilities, enjoying the beautiful game. The street football scene is a way for people of all backgrounds to come together and connect through football.
Amsterdam is known for its rich cultural heritage, and the city has a vibrant music and football scene. While these may seem like two separate worlds, there is actually a significant crossover between music and football culture in Amsterdam.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of football-inspired music coming out of the capital. The Dutch hip-hop scene, in particular, has been heavily influenced by football culture, with many artists referencing football teams and players in their lyrics.
Fashion and art also play a significant role in the crossover between football and culture in Amsterdam. Football-inspired fashion brands, like Daily Paper and Lack of Guidance, have become popular among both football fans and fashion enthusiasts.
Daily Paper was founded in Amsterdam in 2012 by Abderrahmane Trabsini, Hussein Suleiman and Jefferson Osei. The brand has gained a global attention for its unique blend of African heritage, inspired by its founders, and contemporary European design aesthetics. Daily Paper has collaborated with numerous brands and organizations over the years, but their recent link up with Ajax for their 22/23 third kit really caught the eye. The predomnantly gold design ties back to the golden courts of Amsterdam - showing just how important small-sided football is to the community and culture.
Lack of Guidance was founded in Amsterdam back in 2016 by two friends, Akaar Amin and Rens van Strien. The brand is powered by nostalgia with the two founders combining football and fashion with thought-proviking designs. The brand has gained international following with some of the best collections in football, starting with a debut clothing collection inspired by the vibe of a sixties national team heading to the World Cup.
Since then, Lack of Guidance has worked with big brands such as Nike, LAW magazine, Mundial Mag and most recently Red Star FC, designing their home kit for season 22/23.
Street art and murals dedicated to football culture can also be found throughout the city, adding to Amsterdam's vibrant creative scene.
The city's love for the beautiful game is evident everywhere you go, from the streets and squares to the modern stadiums. The Dutch Masters of football have left an indelible mark on the game, and Amsterdam is the beating heart of this footballing legacy.
