The Nike Mercurial Dream Speed (MDS) series launched in the second part of 2019 as a special edition for Nike's best players, including the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo. The MDS series was announced as a speed and design exploration that would be distributed one series at a time across several seasons. Six editions of the series, which was inspired by celebrities like as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, and Sam Kerr, have already been released. Now, while we await the seventh, we look back at the journey thus far, where we see releases that prioritise speed and unique designs.
Nike Mercurial Dream Speed (2019)
The initial Nike Mercurial Dream Speed edition defined perforation patterns, crop lines, colour codes, and other graphic components that demonstrate how the boot was produced, taking designs from the blueprints. It was a strong start to the series of boots, with iridescent flashes throughout the design and the most noticeable bold "MDS 001" pattern wrapping around the heel.
Mercurial Dream Speed 2 (2020)
The second in the series came to the pitch with a fruity, summery attitude and a citrus-infused colourway. The boot was embedded with the classic Nike Swoosh and featured the speed of light, while the gradient dotted pattern on the top was inspired by the Mercurial Vapor III.
Mercurial Dream Speed 3 (2020)
Nike's third release in the Mercurial Dream Speed line was filled with design and visual features inspired by the pace of the game. The complicated design included, among other things, a forward-facing band that pointed in the direction of a wavy net pattern, with a rippling effect that gave the illusion of a net when a goal was scored. A dotted pattern on the grid of the inner heel, as well as the iconic safari print, all sat on a white background.
Mercurial Dream Speed 4.0 (2021)
The typical low-Earth orbit re-entry speed is around 17,500 mph, and this speed generates energy due to friction. The Dream Speed 004's design was inspired by space shuttle re-entry capsules descending at hypersonic speeds, as the colours explode on the boot, neatly contrasting with the MDS003.
Mercurial Dream Speed 5 (2022)
MDS005 was created just for Cristiano Ronaldo, and all design inspiration came from the man himself. While the pale green, aqua, and electric purple colourways illustrate the power created by a peaceful aura, the boot plays with Ronaldo's secret to success in being a relaxed mental state. Although the 005's may seem overly basic, we know that Ronaldo's calm demeanour allows him to erupt appropriately on the field.
Mercurial Dream Speed 006 (2023)
The MDS 006 design featured layered digital tones with metallic and colour-shifting finishes, incorporating a floral graphic inspired by flowers to honour elite players and those who supported them on their journey. While the link to speed may not be immediately clear, the MDS006 offers a unique take on the concept. The floral concept for the design acts as a symbol of giving the elite players that wore the boots the credit they deserve and honouring those who have helped them along the way.
Mercurial Dream Speed 007 (2023)
The Dream Speed series, now in its seventh iteration, continues to draw inspiration from elite athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, and Sam Kerr, reshaping our perception of the beautiful game through their remarkable speed. The latest release is a tribute to CR7, with a gradient from red to orange colourway, showcasing the essence of Ronaldo's impact. This special edition reflects the series' enduring success since its 2019 debut, when it disrupted the market for elite players, backed by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The "Light Crimson/Pale Ivory/Bright Mandarin" colourway is reminiscent of Ronaldo's prime, linking back to some of the best the boots he wore during his illustrious career. These boots embody the magic synonymous with the Dream Speed series, exuding a sense of incredible speed on the pitch.
