Tue, Dec 07.21

Ahead of this week's pop-up store at Ultra Football, we take a look at some of the best creatives in the Aussie football scene that you need to be following.
Unwanted FC
Unwanted FC was founded in late 2018 by brother Keith & Kevin Chan. The brand is inspired by giving unwanted football jerseys a second life and celebrating kits of the past, especially during a time when the gaps between football, fashion and sustainability closes in.
"We create new functional designs out of beloved kits that would've been stuck sitting in a wardrobe, or even worse, heading towards landfill."
"The best part of running the brand would definitely be engaging with the global football community. From collaborating with brands such as Ultra Football, to engaging with our loyal group of customers through our upcycling services."
"It's always encouraging to know that there's others out there who are keen to challenge traditional consumption habits and also have the willingness to build a circular economy. We even get messages from Héctor Bellerín from time-to-time which is always so surreal!"
Aleksandar Jason
Aleksandar Jason might be the hardest working football person in the world. He’s the Melbourne City club photographer, host of Talking Shirt on youtube, and does numerous freelancing gigs with Cult Kits, Ultra Football, New Balance, Nike, you name it, he's done it.
"With the ever rising possibilities of the internet, Instagram has opened the door to collaborations and projects."
Mariame Choucair
In a scene that’s predominantly male-dominated, Mariame Choucair’s stands out as one of the best content creators in the community, be it male or female.
"I blog, create and style football orientated content/media on Instagram purely for the love of vintage shirts, nostalgia, football culture and the game itself"
Mariame has worked with some of the biggest brands in football; Nike, Adidas, ProDirect Soccer, Puma, New Balance & Ultra Football.
"my work with them has and will always be to promote football on the Australian scene, and through this, I hope to create a space for women to be able to share their passion and love for the game; a greater diversity of voices to be heard."
Mariame draws inspiration from the idea that football is 'ubiquitous', so long as you look hard enough.
"I enjoy incorporating football shirts/boots into every-day life scenarios - think, wearing football boots in mundane places other than the pitch, creating spaces that have touches and flecks of references to teams I support, or using football iconography in my style.
"find it super fun to “dress up” a football shirt, for me it is a statement, a talking point, a stimulation of conversation."
She has been one of the main players in the Australian football scene for a while now and continues to innovate through her work and her collaborations within in the scene.
"The Australian football culture scene of late has hit the proverbial glass ceiling. The best thing about it, is that collaborations, ideas and ways to improve the game at all levels are being thrown around and actioned"
"If there was ever a moment in time that really hit the Australian Football Culture brief, it would be the launch for the Adidas HumanRace jersey collection at UltraFootball Nord, in the heart of Sydney, where I was surrounded by the most incredible bunch of talented, gifted and wonderful creatives sprinkled in with professional footballers"
Eli Mengem
Eli Mengem could be one of Australia's biggest exports to the international football stage. Eli is one the best storytellers in football, the frontman for Copa 90’s Derby Days series, travelling the world and documenting the best fan culture football has to offer.
"The inspiration behind what I do is the need to tell stories and show how every country/culture on every corner of the world can be explained through the lens of football"
Best part of being in the scene is its ability to take you to literally every corner of the planet and allow you to meet and interact with the most diverse range of people and communities like no other sport can.
Emily Marrocco
Emily is a self-taught artist based in Melbourne with a passion for art & football. Her artwork is out of this world, with pieces including Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Harvey Elliott, and Trent Alexander Arnold (Yeah shes a Liverpool fan).
"I am a traditional artist specialising in realism portraiture and sport artwork. I began painting 2 years ago, but was inspired to create a Liverpool piece after winning the league and being unable to celebrate due to lockdown."
"There’s so much I’ve loved about my journey, but the best thing about being in this space for me personally has been the amount of incredible people I’ve been able to connect with on social media."
"Whether it’s other artists or creators in the scene, or chatting where I can with people who follow my work, I feel as though I’ve met so many amazing people who have made my experience as a football fan so much more exciting."
3032 FC
If you’re talking football x art, you’re talking 3032 FC. 3032 FC is about the football community and creating content for the fans who shape the game here in Australia.
"I'm a football illustrator based in Melbourne. I'm heavily inspired by so many great football artists out there like Dan Evans, David Squires and Daryl Rainbow to name a few. I think the best part of the scene is linking up with likeminded people who love Australian football"
"I think we all inspire each other to some extent. No matter if you make socks, write a newsletter to record podcasts there's something we can all learn from one another. "
PFC Vintage
In a saturated vintage shirt market, PFC Vintage stand above the rest with the highest quality kits at reasonable prices, selling nostlagia in the form of football shirts.
"I felt/still feel a void in the football scene in Australia. Particularly with the obsession I had with football shirts. They weren’t readily available without going overseas so I created a platform for Australian football fans to get what they want, allowing them to enjoy the memory of the shirt they love."
"I still feel like I’m really early in my journey however the future of the football scene excites me. I see a lot of potential for football and football fans in Australia and with the right people involved it could be a scene that transforms the sport in Australia into something extremely unique."
The Ladies League
If its Womens football you’re looking for, the ladies league has you covered. Easily the best coverage of women's football in Australia, The Ladies League has gone from strength to strength with blog articles, video content and one of the best twitter accounts on the platform.
"We are on a mission to highlight everything that’s great about Australian football, so follow our socials and stay up to date with everything TLL!"
"All positive feedback can be directed to our Twitter page in retweet, quote retweet and plain ol’ tweet form. All negative feedback, especially in form of swearing, abuse and possibly egging, can be directed to FFA Headquarters, Sydney"
Tanya Davis
The biggest Manchester City fan might live in Sydney. Tanya Davis has done a massive amount of work growing the club down under and looks after one of the most active premier league supporter bases in the country.
"I’ve been fortunate to dabble in a couple of different things online. Some would know me as "that City fan" who runs the Official Supporters Club for Manchester City in Sydney"
"Others would know me as the former Social Media Presenter at Melbourne City. It’s hard to put me in a box due to being an eclectic City mash up but however you wish to see me is up to you!"
"I tend to use my social spaces as an extension of my personality to share with people my love of football through my eyes and adventures; one of those spaces being @footballfoods - simply because I like the delectable cuisine of a football game."
"The best part about being in our local scene is that I am able to be part of it; I’m always organising and encouraging to bring fans together in different ways and hope my passion for the game can inspire others to feel more connected to football in their own way."
The Final Third
The Final Third is all about being able to take your favourite kits with you on the go. The Sydney based brand have turned some of the most iconic kits the game as seen into some of the comfiest socks going around.
"The Final Third is around to basically help take football culture to the next level by allowing people to take Football with them every step of the way. I take inspiration from these classic players and kits and turn them into some banging pairs of socks!"
"Edging closer to 4 years in the game, I've seen the scene grow from strength to strength and really seen some awesome content, products and gear be created"
"The other side of it is chatting and interacting to football fans all over the world. Hearing from genuine fans of the brand blows my mind everyday!"
