What does a World Cup year mean? For Nike, it's a moment to turn the dial up to the max and drop what they hope will be their best Mercurial yet. Packed full of new innovation.
Enter the new Nike Air Zoom Mercurial. This is as special as it gets and a drop which is going to get the world talking. It's also one very close to us because we have something MASSIVE to share soon. July 14th is a date to keep an eye on. We can't wait to tell you more...
This boot once again aims to change the game. Nike have continued to impress with Mercurial ever since 1998 when the boots burst onto the scene on Ronaldo's feet at the World Cup in France. In 2022, our very own Sam Kerr is an intergral part of this launch and as an Australian football brand we couldn't be prouder.
The new Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Superfly IX and Vapor XV are packed with technology upgrades. Just looking at them feels special, ultra modern and fresh with the large AIR branding catching attention. You know this is a big, big Nike brand moment.
Let's take a look at the upper first because of that big AIR branding. Nike took inspiration from Roman sandals (yep, seriously) for their new Vaporsite+ upper. This super strong, grip-enhancing mesh with Flyknit lining allows for better ball control at high speed. Lockdown and fit has been improved thanks to endless hours spent on crafting the Speed Cage design. All this means that this should be one of your best fitting Mercurials.
“Being a Mercurial athlete, I’m always thinking about fast. I want to be faster than my opponent. What excited me most is that this technology is revolutionary. Air is what’s really going to put the Mercurial athletes in the best conditions to perform.” - Kylian Mbappe.
The most noticeable and coolest update this time around is the Air Zoom bag which sits in the soleplate. The boots take inspiration from the innovation from athletics and basketball. Sports where Air Zoom has treated fans to high level comfort and performance for years. The concept was first revealed at an inovation summit two years ago. Now that we finally have them in hand, we're confident enough to say they have been well and truly worth the wait. If you're a fan of sexy soleplates - this is right up there.
The three-quarter length Zoom airbag is the first ever football specific version and sits directly inside the soleplate. If you want a closer look when you purchase your pair, pull out the insole and take a look inside. This airbag aims to bring the foot closer to the ground for explosive energy return. Music to the ears of the games speediest attacking players. The airbag also features flex groves and these are present for better flexibility.
“While sprinting and cutting at high speeds, it’s important that the footballer feels secure in the boot. The Vaporposite+ upper was further refined to provide a lockdown fit through a data driven designed speed cage providing optimal support of the foot in areas where footballers need it most,” - Collin Eder, Senior Director of Global Football Footwear at Nike.
One thing that looks incredible on the new soleplate is the Tri-Star stud pattern. This new design helps players move laterally as well as downhill for faster play in all direction and will be available on all models.
