We recently sat down with die-hard Manchester United fans, Vasko and Sophie, to explore how the Red Devils have shaped their lives. In celebration of the adidas Manchester United x George Best collection, they shared their favourite memories, from iconic players to unforgettable football moments.
Vasko’s love for Manchester United began at the young age of six. "I used to idolize David Beckham as a kid," he shares. "My older brother was a big fan—our home was full of posters and memorabilia. I kind of just fell in love with United from then on." This passion even extended to his relationship, as he proudly recalls converting Sophie into a fellow Red Devil. “Now, she almost knows more than me!”
Their shared love for the team reached new heights when they met Bruno Fernandes after the Manchester Derby last year. "He’s actually a really nice and humble guy," Sophie mentions. "He was happy to pose for a photo and even stop to chat for a couple of minutes." Bruno has since become their favourite player, a symbol of the club's modern era.
When it comes to kits, Vasko has a clear favourite: the Umbro 'Sharp' kits from the 90s and early 2000s. "For me, those kits are just something else," he enthuses. "I love the baggier fit and the unique designs. If I had to pick one, it would be the blue away kit from 1996-1998. The detailing on it, especially the lines and the crest in the middle, is stunning." Sophie’s admiration for United kits takes a different angle—she’s always had a soft spot for goalkeeper kits. "I've got a signed David De Gea jersey, and I absolutely adore it," she says with pride.
Vasko’s favorite European Cup memory? “Definitely the 2008 Final penalty shootout win against Chelsea,” he says. "I was a very happy boy going to school that morning after that nerve-wracking win!"
As a lifelong football player, Vasko has a deep understanding of what it means to be "unapologetically football." "To me, it means embracing the love for the game freely and fully," he explains. "It’s about being authentic and taking pride in why you love football." For Vasko, football isn’t just a sport; it's a community that brings people together. "There’s also a strong sense of community—whether it’s sharing the pitch with teammates or having passionate discussions with friends over a coffee or beer."
When it comes to George Best, Vasko’s admiration runs deep. "I’ve actually got a sticker on my drink bottle that says, ‘on the piss with Georgie Best’—it’s a chant the fans sing," he laughs. “He’s obviously part of United’s DNA and one of the greatest of all time, but he was also probably the first ever celebrity footballer—he lived like a rockstar!”
