This one is going to be polarising – there’s no doubt about that. The Manchester United 20/21 third jersey is here with its visually distinctive design inspired by striped jerseys from the club’s history.
Manchester United first had a striped jersey design over 100 years ago. In fact, the first year United played at Old Trafford the team wore a classic blue and white striped shirt as the alternate kit. Since then we’ve seen more striped designs from the 1970s and 80s that are also ingrained in the Manchester United history books.
The 20/21 third jersey aims to pay homage to those former eye-catching, crazy designs that stood out like Manchester United does as a global football powerhouse – even if results haven’t been up to their lofty standards of late.
The jersey is a fresh update to past traditions, with the vibrant new design coming from adidas spending time re-drawing, hacking and re-imaging combined elements from various jerseys throughout the club’s rich history to create something new.
The colours on show are of course United’s iconic club colours of red, white and black, which come together as one of the boldest patterns you’re ever likely to see on a jersey. The collar features the words ‘110 years of stripes’ which signifies the history of the club’s jerseys.
Tech wise the jersey offers AEROREADY – FEEL READY technology, that helps players feel comfortable and ready to play.
The design is certainly going to be one that will have many fans but also many who prefer a tradition and safer look, perhaps feeling a bit overwhelmed by the whole design, especially once you see the matching shorts and socks.
You have to give adidas credit here though. It’s 2020 and a massive club with traditions they want to pay homage to, so they’ve gone after it in the most modern way possible.
