The MLS season is just around the corner, with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami kicking things off at home against Real Salt Lake on Thursday, February 22nd. Today, though, the focus is on the Big Apple and one of the original teams from 1996, albeit under a different name - The New York/New Jersey MetroStars, also known in present-day as the New York Red Bulls.
It's a club that has seen some unbelievable names pull on the shirt - think Thierry Henry, Roberto Donadoni, Juan Pablo Angel, and our very own Tim Cahill. Then there are the lesser-known big names in terms of their previous playing careers who arrived in the city and made it their own - with Bradley Wright-Phillips, also known as BWP, being the standout. BWP is a two-time MLS Golden Boot winner and currently the New York Red Bulls' record goalscorer in their history.
Even with star names and BWP scoring so many goals, the Red Bulls haven't gone all the way in the MLS yet, with their closest result coming back in 2008 when they took on the Columbus Crew, coming up short 3-1 in the final.
Since then, the New York Red Bulls have cultivated a reputation for their high-pressing style of play, often implementing a fast-paced and aggressive approach that aims to disrupt opponents' build-up play. This tactical philosophy, influenced by their former coach Jesse Marsch, has become synonymous with the club's identity and has led to some memorable matches characterised by intense pressing and quick counterattacks.
Now, shifting gears to the present day, as anticipation builds for the upcoming MLS season, fans eagerly await the unveiling of the New York Red Bulls' new jersey for 2024. With each new design, the club aims to capture the essence of their rich history while also embracing innovation and modern aesthetics. This is no different.
There aren't as many recognisable logos in the world like Red Bull's - and for the New York Red Bulls' 2024 Legacy jersey, adidas has seamlessly worked the logo into the design. The inspiration from the design links back to NYC street culture anc community, with a call out to the MetroStars days by way of that wavy, zig-zag black design on the predominantly red base.
That, met with the white Three Stripes on the shoulder, and adidas logo look fire and worthy of lifting the Cup this year. Will they be in the mix? Find out next week when they kick off their campaign against Nashville.
