All the noise is coming from adidas at the moment. The recent Special Edition Messi X Speedflow 'El Retorno', just in time for Messi's Copa America triumph, created some real hype in the lead up to the new X Speedflow which has just landed.
X Speedflow is a new chapter of speed from the Three Stripes to be worn by the world's fastest players including Mo Salah, Heung-Min Son, Karim Benzema and Vivianne Miedema.
Back in 2020, adidas drilled down their focus to develop a boot that reflects fast football - naturally that boot had to be ultra light-weight. Enter the X Ghosted which was easily one of our favourite boots of last year with its translucent upper and nods to the past.
Following on from X Ghosted, adidas decided to go back to the drawing board and this time hear from athletes and amateur players to look for ideas on how to improve an already fantastic pair of boots.
This brought about the three key aspects the new update to X focussed on; instant acceleration, agility and instinct.
Tech wise the new boots feature an updated Carbitex SpeedFrame, Engineered Agility Frame and Engineered Lightweight PrimeKnit upper.
The Carbitex SpeedFrame is an evolved outsole which has been created to support the foundation of fast play. This allows players to cover the greatest amount of straight-line distance in the quickest time possible. The boots include a carbon insert in the forefoot to enable explosive instant and transmission of power on the pitch.
This construction also introduces the new engineered agility frame. This lattice structure is made to be able to wrap around the foot with a snug fit that provides unrivalled support, lockdown and stability in all directions. The focus on light-weight continues here with minimal materials utilised.
The final piece of new tech is the engineered lightweight Primeknit. We've covered Primeknit in detail in the past because we love it so much, with the iconic material used here once again to provide an adaptive fit which allows players to react quickly. The Primeknit upper is the lightest ever on an adidas football boot, which combines with the new Primeknit speed collar for better lockdown.
X Ghosted was a major breakthrough for us in helping players unlock new levels of linear speed. But through our research when developing the next iteration of adidas’ fastest football boot, the team were led by this idea of merging the physical and mental. So, we’ve combined the very best in adidas performance technology with a deep understanding of the speed needs of the modern game - X Speedflow supports instant speed, radical agility and instinct with the aim of creating the space for players to reach a true state of ‘flow” - Dave Surace, Senior Design Director, adidas Football.
Fans of the vacuum fit feel that the X Ghosted provided on foot will be pleased to know the new X Speedflow retains a sprint spike last which continues this feature. The design team also decided to improve comfort, resulting in a new engineered heel construction and an anti-slip heel lining created from more comfortable materials.
